Prevention First Fire Safety Education for Preschool Children and Families
Fires are set by children of all ages, some as young as 2 years old. Tragically, children playing with fire is the leading cause for fire deaths and fire injuries of children under age 5.
This train the trainer program was developed through grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and is designed for preschool teachers, childcare program directors and fire service. The framework for the training is the award-winning preschool program play safe! be safe!®, developed by BIC Corporation with the assistance of Fireproof Children and other child development specialists. Because of the train the trainer model, the durability of the play safe! kit, and the replicability of other materials, to date
more than 4,204,000 people have benefited from Prevention First Fire Safety programs.
The one-day workshop includes:
- Effective methods of teaching fire prevention and safety to preschool children based on research on children's risk-taking behavior.
- Hands-on learning activities based on language arts and cognitive skills, including story-building, classification and naming skills, pattern recognition and visual memory skills, and vocabulary building.
- Take-home pieces to bring specific safety messages into the children’s families, including the importance of practicing home exit drills, having a working smoke detector, and keeping matches and lighters out of children's reach.
- Easy ways to partner with local fire service to reinforce fire prevention in communities.
